Heretical Gaming is my blog about my gaming life, featuring small skirmishes and big battles from many historical periods (and some in the mythic past or the far future too). The focus is on battle reports using a wide variety of rules, with the occasional rules review, book review and odd musing about the gaming and history. Most of the battles use 6mm-sized figures and vehicles, but occasionally 15mm and 28mm figures appear too.

Inn at the Last Bridge: a Five Leagues From The Borderlands Campaign

I have had a go at converting a short role-playing campaign into one suitable for Five Leagues From The Borderlands (I am still using the old 1e at present).

For my first attempt, I have used a very short campaign: the campaign included in the old Middle-Earth Roleplaying Game rulebook.

It is described as an 'adventure' but really it is a short campaign since it has two unrelated adventures going on in the same area: one is the rescue of a boy who has been captured by trolls (and potentially the elimination of these trolls); the other is the raiding of an orc hold (and potentially the unmasking of their boss, a human spy in the local area).

Campaign Details:

Region: The Borderlands
Villages: One (The Last Inn)
Threat Levels: Outlaws 2, Border Tension 2, Dark Secrets 1
Activities: Study is not possible in this campaign
Common Goods: No armour is available to buy; and only hand weapons and missile weapons are available
Typical Terrain: Woods, Hills, Streams

Short Summary: The group is based at The Last Inn, a large inn in the wilderness and one of the only inhabited locations between Bree and Rivendell.  The area is currently dangerous and unsettled: Trolls are marauding in the area and are feared to have taken one of the sons of the family running the inn captive; whilst a small Orc band are making a nuisance of themselves in the area.  There is believed to be, by some of the local farmers, a castle hidden in the woods which hides both great riches and an evil sorceror.  The group must eliminate the threat of the trolls and the orcs as best they can...

The troll lair is a small cave system of 5 caverns. The lair automatically has the Prisoner, Victims, Battered Weaponry and Sack of Valuables (Problem 2) finds.

Other Campaign Notes:

If 'Dark Secrets' is reduced to 0, then the Human Sorceror can only be encountered in the orc lair (his cover is blown and he is lying low)
The campaign is automatically won if:
Both lairs are taken
The Human sorceror and both troll leaders OR the troll lair are eliminated
